Educational Fair set for October 18

Parents from six Fulton County elementary and middle schools are invited to a Supplemental Educational Services Vendor Fair October 18, from 9-11 a.m. at the Teaching Museum South,689 North Ave., Hapeville, Georgia 30354.

The term “supplemental educational services” is part of the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act and refers to extra help given to eligible students in reading, language arts, or math. The services are offered toparents of children attending public schools that have been identified as “Needs Improvement” for two or more years.ÊIn Fulton, this option is offered this year at Palmetto Elementary, Love T. Nolan Elementary, Bear Creek Middle, Camp Creek Middle, McNair Middle, and Woodland Middle schools.ÊThe program is only open to students who qualify for free and reduced lunch, with priority going to students with low academic achievement.

All participants in the fair have been listed by the Georgia Department of Education as approved supplemental educational services providers.ÊThe school system will reimburse the private provider, up to an amount set by state and federal law. The parent must pay any costs above that.ÊThe parent also must provide transportation to the private service provider.

Parents of students eligible for supplemental educational services soon will receive a letter from the school system explaining the program.ÊThe deadline for requesting such services is October 22, 2003.
