Eastern Coweta getting a new school

The Coweta County Board of Education this week greenlighted the site for the newest school in the county.
Willis Road Middle School is set to be built adjacent to Willis Road Elementary School, and provide a campus-like setting for students in the fastest-growing region of the county.
School system public information officer Dean Jackson said the new $13 million school will feature 50 classrooms and resemble Arnall and Smokey Road middle schools.
“That school was the next item on our SPLOST list,” Jackson said.
Nearly $7 million of the construction price will receive SPLOST funding, while the other $6 million comes from the state,” he said.
The school system already owned the land for the site, so it may also save some money on site preparation work, he added.
School officials are meeting with the architects to hammer out the details of the school’s design, and Jackson expects the bid process to occur later this year, with construction starting in 2004.
“It’s probably going to look a lot like the newer middle schools we’ve opened, but we’re also talking to our middle school personnel to see what they think,” Jackson said.
Currently, the media centers at most of the new middle schools are at the front of the school, and Jackson said one idea circulating is to move them more towards the center of the facility.
The school will join the list of schools built in the last 10 years to handle the explosive growth east of Interstate 85.
“We fully expect the school to open in 2005,” he said.
