Fayette NAACP hosts annual banquet Oct. 25

The Fayette County chapter of the NAACP will host its annual Freedom Fund Banquet Saturday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. at the Wyndham Peachtree Conference Center.

The Freedom Fund Banquet is an annual gala event established to celebrate freedom and to fund the struggle to maintain freedom, justice and equality. The theme for this year’s banquet is “The Journey To Justice.”

Freedom Fund 2003 will feature a keynote address by Georgia Attorney General Thurbert Baker. A native of Rocky Mount, N.C. he graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1975 and received his law degree from Emory University in 1979. Gov. Zell Miller initially appointed Baker as Georgia’s 52nd Attorney General in 1997. In Nov. 1998, he was elected to serve a four-year term and re-elected in Nov. 2002.

Celebrated Olympic champion Ralph Boston is the honorary co-chairman of the sixth annual Freedom Fund Banquet. WXIA-TV news anchor Tiffany Cochran will once again be the mistress of ceremonies for the affair, which draws a large number of dignitaries and guests from all around the Fayette County area. Expected attendees include U.S. Rep. David Scott and home run king Hank Aaron. Gov. Sonny Purdue is also invited to attend.

The Wyndham Peachtree Conference Center is at 2443 Ga. Highway 54 in Peachtree City. The program, which is scheduled to run from 7 p.m.-midnight, includes a reception, dinner, speaker’s address, entertainment, awards ceremony, and dancing. The Fayette NAACP branch holds its regular monthly meetings at the Flat Rock A. M. E. Church every second Saturday of the month. All members, old and new, are encouraged to attend.
