Go Kaleefornia! Dr. Knox Herndon It was truly amazing how the "Kaleefornia" governor's race got such strong publicity. It is likewise amazing to me how politics has gotten such a bad name. It has become ranked down there (note I didn't say up there) with lawyers. What further amazes me is how these two professions could and should be ranked with the top professions of power and integrity to help individuals and our country. Just think how much good a Christian lawyer with impeccable credentials, morals and character could do in our society. Just think how much good a Christian politician with impeccable credentials, morals and character could do in our society. There is no reason these two professions could not be characterized as honorable and noble and for the "common good" of mankind instead of sleaze, graft and immorality. Isn't it interesting that these great positions of power have changed from being positions of great honor and morality to positions of abuse of this God-given opportunity? Case in point, look at the lawyers in the ACLU. In my opinion these are the sleaziest of the sleaze. These men and women delight in taking the most bizarre, ungodly, atheistic, America-hating, cases imaginable. If I were a judge hearing their cases, I would throw out 98.999 percent of their lawsuits under the guiding principle that they had not a shred of evidence for "the common good." The only reason I wouldn't throw all cases is that I would not want to be unfair. What does God's Word say about our influence and the professions we have chosen? In Luke 12:48 it states "For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required." In other words, if God allows you or me to ascend to a position of power, that position is to be used for "good" for God and your fellow man. We will all be held accountable one day for our sphere of influence. Imagine that you were put in this particular place in history, with this particular set of circumstances, in this particular moment in history. Remember the movie "Chariots of Fire?" Eric Little was a long distance runner and was a man of great faith in God. He was asked about his faith and he responded, "I run for His pleasure." Those of us who have done a lot of running know that it is mostly a solitary sport and at times lonely. Imagine this world class runner stating that he runs for "God's pleasure." Wow, what an idea that whatever we do in life, it can and should be dedicated to "His pleasure!" Wouldn't it be wonderful if all lawyers and politicians looked at their professions the way Eric Little did? Maybe their reputations would change. Another Scripture jumps out at me: "With God all things are possible!" Go Kaleefornia! (Dr. Knox Herndon is the pastor of His House Community Church (SBC). Rev. Greg Mausz is sr. assoc.
