County gives nod to improvements on Lower Fayetteville Road

County residents who travel Lower Fayetteville Road as an alternative to Ga. Highway 34 may soon see some improvements to the road.

The Coweta County Commission signed off unanimously on on a local government agreement with the DOT to provide nearly $6 million in improvements to the busy road.

Earlier in the year, the County Commission had been reluctant to approve the document, since it was not sure when payment would arrive from the state.

The funds are coming to the county as part of an agreement to allow the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority to operate commuter buses in the county.

The board approved the document Tuesday after getting county administrator Theron Gay’sassurance the county would start receiving the money once it started fixing the road.

Commission Chairman Leigh Schlumper also wanted a better idea of how the road would be fixed.

“Six million sounds like an awful lot of money just to add two feet to the road,” she said.

But Gay said the DOT funds would widen the road, in addition to providing shoulders, softening curves and improving dangerous intersections.

Sheriff Mike Yeager said his department patrols the road on a regular basis, and tries to keep the speed down.

“Unfortunately, we can’t keep somebody out there 24 hours a day,” he said.

Schlumper hoped that softening the curves would not create a “speedway’ affect to the road, but agreed to approve the governmental agreement and get some relief for one of the county’s busiest roads.
