Douglas Thomas Minyard


Douglas Thomas “Doug” Minyard, 59, Milner, died Sept. 24, 2003. He was a former resident of Fayetteville. Memorial services were at the Conner-Westbury Funeral Home chapel, Griffin, with the Rev. Gene Luke officiating. Survivors include his wife 28 years, Debbie Minyard, Milner; sons, Steve Minyard, Griffin, and Doug Minyard Jr., Barnesville; daughters, Toni Warren, Leesburg, Fla., and Marcy Patterson, Forsyth, Ga.; seven grandchildren; and brothers, Albert Minyard Jr., Jim Minyard, and Wayne Minyard. Memorial donations may be made to the ALS Association, 1955 Cliff Valley Way, Suite 116, Atlanta, GA 30329. Conner-Westbury Funeral Home, Griffin, was in charge.

Doris C. Jones


Doris C. Jones, 71, Jonesboro, died Sept. 27, 2003. She was born Feb. 20, 1932 in College Park, Ga. Services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel with the Rev. Bill Lacey officiating. Interment was at Gwinnett Memorial Gardens, Lawrenceville, Ga. Survivors include a daughter, Teresa Rost, Germany; sisters, Evelyn Brooks, Fayetteville, and Grace Reese, East Point; and three grandchildren. Carl J. Viola Dailey Horton


Viola Dailey Horton, 84, Fayetteville, died Sept. 27, 2003. She was born Jan. 4, 1919, in Toccoa, Ga. Services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel with the Rev. Bill Delay officiating. Interment was at Westminster Memorial Gardens, Peachtree City. Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Sopp and Barry Bartlett, Tyrone; sisters, Burma Howard, Safety Harbor, Fla., and Joy Bone, Stone Mountain, Ga.; and a grandchild, Willem Brian Sopp, Stockbridge. Margaret Elizabeth Aleshire


Margaret Elizabeth “Libby” Aleshire, 83, Peachtree City, died Sept. 28, 2003. She was born March 19, 1920 in Polk County, N. C. She was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Women’s Army Corps. She was a member of the Morning Light Chapter #312, the Order of Eastern Star, and the Peachtree City United Methodist Church. Memorial services were at the Peachtree City United Methodist Church with the Rev. Chuck Hodges and the Rev. Betsy Haas officiating. Survivors include her husband of 59 years, William J. “Bill” Aleshire, Peachtree City; daughters, Nancy E. Cook, Thompson, Ga., and Carol L. McCarley, Cumming; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Carmichael-Hemperley Funeral Home, Peachtree City, was in charge.

Lt. Col. Edward G. Furlong


Edward G. Furlong, lieutenant colonel United States Army, retired, 65, Tyrone, died Sept. 28, 2003. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Eileen Furlong, a sister, Joan, and his wife, Linda. He was retired from the Army at Fort McPherson with 20 years of service. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church where he was active in the choir, and the St. Vincent dePaul Society. Services were at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with the Rev. Father John Walsh officiating. Interment with full military honors was at Camp Memorial Gardens, Fayetteville. Survivors include sons, Michael and Eileen Furlong, Navarre, Fla.; Kevin and Jana Furlong, Omaha, Neb., Brian and Trenna Furlong, Rome, Ga., Keith and Elizabeth Furlong, Rome, Ga., and Eric Furlong, Baltimore, Md.; daughters, Debra and Horst Gruenagel, Kashofen, Germany, and Valerie and David Harrell, Boron, Calif.; grandchildren, Katie Furlong, and Ryan Furlong, Omaha, Neb., Bryna Furlong, and Brentley Furlong, Rome, Ga., Steven Harrell and Kimmie Harrell, Boron, Calif.; a great-granddaughter, Jordan Furlong, Navarre, Fla.; brothers, Alfred Furlong, Massachusetts, and Richard Furlong, California; sisters-in-law, Karen and Bob Peltz, Pennsylvania, Lucy Furlong, and Debbie and Nick Pitaro, all of Massachusetts. Virginia Marie Bernard


Virginia Marie Bernhard, 59, Fayetteville, died Sept. 28, 2003. She was born May 13, 1944 in Rockdale County, Ga. A private family service will be held at a later date. Survivors include her husband, John David Bernhard, Fayetteville; sons, Eddie and Allynn Bernhard, and Ronnie and Deana Bernhard, both of Fayetteville; a granddaughter, Caitlyn; three brothers; and two sisters. Avis Elaine Clark Hicks


Avis “Elaine” Clark Hicks, 86, Peachtree City, died Sept. 29, 2003. She was born March 18, 1913 in Dale County, Ala. She was preceded in death by her husband, Senora Hicks. Services were at the Holman-Headland Mortuary chapel, Headland, Ala., with the Rev. Otis Derrah officiating. Interment was at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, formerly the Wiggins Cemetery. Survivors include daughters, Jerry H. and Dr. Don Bailey, Florence, S. C., and Janice H. and Terry Killingsworth, Sharpsburg, Ga.; grandsons, Mark and Anna Bailey, Mayfield Heights, Ohio, Tim and Lynne Killingsworth, Kennesaw, Ga., Joe and Karen Killingsworth, Alpharetta, Ga., and Todd Killingsworth, Sharpsburg, Ga.; and great-grandchildren, Matthew Bailey, and Andrew Bailey, both of Mayfield Heights, Ohio, Joy Killingsworth, Amy Killingsworth, Parker Killingsworth and Benjamin Killingsworth, all of Kennesaw, Ga.; and a sister, Merle Skipper, Grimes, Ala. Edward Bernard Martin Jr.


Edward Bernard Martin Jr., 81, Fayetteville, died Sept. 29, 2003. He was born Feb. 11, 1922 in Richmond, Va., the oldest of eight children to Edward and Louise Martin. He was also preceded in death by a brother and a sister. He attended school and college in Virginia. He was a veteran of World War II, first in the Sea-Bees and the in the Navy. After the war he taught and coached high school sports in Virginia, and then attended the University of Illinois, where he received his master’s degree. He became a school principal and then assistant superintendent of schools in Gahanna, Ohio. He founded and led a cooperative purchasing program for the schools in Franklin County, Ohio, still in operation. Upon retirement he worked for an insurance company before moving to Georgia. He served six years as president of the River’s Edge Homeowner's Association and was active in the Knight of Columbus, Council No. 11458. Memorial services were at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Jimmy Adams officiating. Interment was at Camp Memorial Park, Fayetteville. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Mary Martin, whom he met at the University of Illinois and married June 12, 1953; sons, Mark Wayne and Diane Martin, Fayetteville, and Michael Edward and Mara Martin, Stockbridge; a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Williams, Fayetteville; grandchildren, Kyle, Kristen, Justin, Lindsey, Joshua, and Jacob; four brothers; and one sister. Sarah F. McElwaney


Sarah F. McElwaney, 95, Peachtree City, died Sept. 30, 2003. She was born Aug. 14, 1908 in Fayette County, the daughter of James Robert “Bob” and Nan Thomas Houston. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hilary McElwaney. Services were at Flat Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Priester officiating. Interment was at Holly Hill Memorial Park, Fairburn. Survivors include daughters, S. Jean Pelsue, Peachtree City, and Sally Brock, Eatonton, Ga., nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Lester Houston, Anniston, Ala. Carl J. Robert H. Murdock


Robert H. Murdock, 76, Jonesboro, died Sept. 30, 2003. He was born July 17, 1927 in St. Louis, Mo. He was a member of the new Hope orchestra of the South Metro band and was a model train and aircraft enthusiast. Services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel with the Rev. Barry Thompson and the Rev. Larry Stegall officiating. Interment was at New Hope Baptist Church cemetery, Fayetteville. Survivors include his wife, June Moss Murdock, Jonesboro; sons, Robert H. Murdock Jr., Mark E. Murdock, and Frank H. Murdock, all of Jonesboro; stepsons, Clay Ramsey, Jonesboro, and Russell Ramsey, Peachtree City; stepdaughters, Joy Bavalas, Riverdale, and Janet Williams, Sharpsburg; six grandchildren; and five step-grandchildren. Charles Evertte Graves


Charles Evertte Graves, 80, Fayetteville, died Sept. 30, 2003. He was born Oct. 12, 1922 in Fayette County, the son of Charles Minton and Eugenia Milsaps Murdock. Graveside services were at the Fayetteville City Cemetery with the Rev. Chris Perkins officiating. Survivors include a daughter, Linda and Harold Kelley, Fayetteville; a grandson, Collin Kelley, Atlanta, a sister, Opal Carter, Fayetteville; and three nieces. Carl J. Richard D. Dunn


Richard D. Dunn, 46, Dunwoody, died Sept. 30, 2003. He was born in Atlanta, son of the late Leonard Frances Borges II and Patricia May Dunn-Leach. He was also preceded in death by his grandmother, Mrs. G. B. Dunn, Spartanburg, S. C. He was owner and president of Exclusive Relocation of Atlanta, Inc., and a member of Dunwoody United Methodist Church. Services were at the Floyd’s Greenlawn chapel, Spartanburg, S. C., with the Rev. Stephen Streett officiating. Interment was at Sunset Memorial Park. Survivors include his wife, Charlene Rae Fillers Dunn; a son, Richard Patrick Dunn; brothers, Lennie F. Dunn, Fayetteville, Ga., and Roger Borges, Oklahoma City; sisters, Tricia L. Mitchell, Spartanburg, S. C., and Susie Borges, Oklahoma City; and a grandmother, Alice Borges, Napa, Calif. J. F. Floyd Mortuary, Spartanburg, S. C., was in charge.
