Response helps others cope with tragedy
The Hopewell United Methodist Church in Tyrone is holding outreach groups every Sunday throughout October. Christian Response is support by others in answer to tragedy and loss. Group education, including testimonials, is divided into two sessions: loss of a child and loss due to suicide. What can you do, for this cause, to help others, just like you, overcome their pain? Through Christian principles, we encourage individuals to seek out the help they need and share their experiences. Always remember, our hardships can teach us and make us stronger. You can make a difference for someone in a similar situation. Education will be in groups and lead through testimonials, by people from our community. Christian Response will be lead by Christian Counselor Deana Riley, L.P.C., of InsideOut Dynamics. Riley will be providing the "Coping with Tragedy" Educational Session, whose focus is on typical responses to tragedy and how to take care of yourself in the midst of tragedy. What are warning signs that someone needs additional help? How can you help a grieving friend? What can you do to help others in need of emotional healing? What is helpful or harmful when supporting those coping with tragedy? What are opportunities and resources for support available in our community? Support groups, professional counseling, Stephen Ministry, and even Internet sites are available. Resources will be available for further consideration. Information is the key to understanding and the root of helping to overcome any situation. Stephen Ministry is a laity-led peer support ministry. Individuals can meet weekly to talk one-on-one for support and encouragement. Not everyone is comfortable in the same environment or the with the same method. Testimonials are a base for our education to overcome the pain. Talking to someone becomes an important part of the healing process, days, months or even years later. Through sharing circumstances, healing and recovery become a possibility. After the structured sessions and a fellowship break, groups are invited to participate in a nondenominational Memorial/Prayer Service, lead by Reverend Mark Riley, M. Div., Pastor, United Methodist Church, Tyrone. Christian Response welcomes everyone interested in learning how to help others struggling and suffering with tragic loss. Counselor Deana Riley, L.P.C., of InsideOut Dynamics, will be available for specific suggestions for referrals, offer additional outside resources for further assistance, and to answer any further questions. Christian Response is funded solely by donations. Reservations are required. Please call Hopewell United Methodist Church at 770-306-7537, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. through 1:30 p.m.
