Fitness program kicked off

Willis Road, Newnan Crossing and Eastside Elementary Schools model schools for Project Fit America and kicked off the program Tuesday.

Never before has there been so many out-of-shape, overweight and inactive American children. According to the U.S. Surgeon General's Report, childhood obesity has tripled since 1980.

In answer to this alarming trend, PFA provides a research-based solution that works. Formed in 1990, PFA is a nonprofit organization that donates fully funded fitness programs specifically designed to address the deficit areas where children fail fitness tests.

The Coweta County project is a unique collaborative sponsorship between Newnan Hospital, the Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation and the Keith Brooking Children's Foundation.

Sandra Holt, Director of the Newnan Hospital Health and Fitness Center, spearheaded the project. "Working together, this program will become a jewel in the crown for these three schools to showcase a solution to make kids more active and healthy," said Holt.

"We applaud this collaborative effort as a model for helping to create these flagship demonstration sites for fitness in education," said PFA's executive director, Stacey Cook. "These exemplary partnerships between public and private sectors prove we can all work together to make a difference in improving the health of children."

"The support we have received for this project is proof of the long-term commitment this community has made to the health and well being of the children in our community," said Dr. Peggy Connell, Coweta County School Superintendent.
