Library Commission learning to campaign correctly for library project

The Peachtree City Library Commission met Monday night for a workshop session. The goal was to discuss where they are in their process of spreading the word about the bond referendum to renovate and expand the library.

With the vote scheduled for just over a month away, things are getting tight and the members of the commission are trying their hardest to spread the word.

However, there are rules to follow in spreading the word and some members are feeling very constrained by these rules. Some of these rules include commission members not campaigning on city property, not placing anything in the library asking people to vote a certain way and remaining apolitical when they meet with organizations. Commission member Barbara Swafford even contemplated stepping down from the commission so that she could campaign for the library project without any rules to follow.

Swafford decided to remain on the commission and it appears that all is on track. The McIntosh 4-H has created a poster and a coloring contest for children. Both projects will tie in with the library project. There was also good news for the project when Chairman Chris Clark announced that an anonymous donor is printing 5,000 color copies of the informational brochure.

After the fallout of the Peachtree City Development Authority resignations last week, the commission also felt that it was important that the public knew that they were different from an authority. Vice-chairman Marie Washburn stated that as a commission, "we don't have the authority to borrow money or represent the city in a contract. We are only an advisory board that recommends policies."

The next scheduled meeting of the Peachtree City Library Commission is Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.
