Deputy hospitalized after crashing patrol car A Fayette County sheriff's deputy remained hospitalized Monday after he was injured when his patrol car wrecked early Saturday morning. Dep. Brent Lonkert was leaving a fire call at the Four Seasons Mobile Home Park when his car failed to negotiate a turn as he reached Rivers Road, said Maj. Wayne Hannah of the Fayette County Sheriff's Department. "He was going way too fast to make that turn," Hannah said. Lonkert's patrol unit skidded off the road, striking a telephone box and then a utility pole, Hannah said. Lonkert was taken by medical helicopter to Atlanta Medical Center, where he faces future surgery to repair two cracked vertebrae, Hannah added. When the crash occurred, Lonkert was heading to Tyrone to assist an officer there who was trying to stop a vehicle on Ga. Highway 74, Hannah said. A witness who was traveling on Rivers Road witnessed the accident and confirmed that Lonkert's emergency blue lights were activated, Hannah said. The sheriff's department conducted the investigation because the Georgia State Patrol was tied up at the time and there was only one vehicle involved, Hannah said. The evidence at the scene matched up easily with witness accounts, Hannah added. No charges are expected to be filed. The county's accident review board will also review the incident at a later date, Hannah noted.
