Fayetteville seeking grant for sidewalks connecting schools, downtown, offices By JOHN
MUNFORD
The city of Fayetteville is seeking a $800,000 grant to create a network of sidewalks that would link local schools, the downtown area and the Fayette County Judicial Complex. The city wants to build 2.63 miles of pedestrian access routes, with sidewalks along Ga. Highway 54 and Lee Street and a multiuse path along Grady Avenue, which would serve Fayette County Middle and Spring Hill Elementary schools. One of the sidewalk connections will link an existing sidewalk along Hwy. 54 near Jeff Davis Drive to Booker Street, the home of East Fayette Elementary. The Lee Street sidewalk will connect the downtown area with the new judicial complex, and a sidewalk along Hwy. 54 west will link businesses from the Magnolia Park office complex all the way to the Fayette County Government Stonewall complex. Another sidewalk along Hwy. 54 east would like residential areas from Gwinnett Street to the entrance of the city's industrial park on Robinson Drive . The project will require an estimated $340,000 in matching funds, but the cost may be significantly less, noted City Engineer Don Easterbrook. Also, the city could spread the work over several budget years to make it more affordable, Easterbrook said in a memo to the City Council. The council unanimously approved the grant application at its regular meeting last week. The city has been assisted by a consultant who has had success in seeking this type of funding, Easterbrook said. Although this grant is through the Georgia Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program, the city also hopes to seek sidewalk and multiuse paths from the federal Transportation Enhancement program.
