Sandy Creek student hit by car dies in hospital

A Sandy Creek High School student who was hit by a car on Jenkins Road last week died Thursday when he was taken off life support, officials said.

Joshua D. Ivey, 16, was struck by a 2001 VW Beetle driven by Sydney Grier Feemester, 16, also a student at Sandy Creek, after school Sept. 15. Ivey was reportedly jumping in and out of the road before the incident, officials said.

Feemester swerved in an attempt to avoid hitting Ivey but was unsuccessful, police said.

Deputies investigating the incident do not intend to file any charges against Feemester, police said.

"We have not received any information that will cause us to reverse and file charges," said Capt. Bryan Woodie of the Fayette County Sheriff's Department. "... There's no indication she could have done anything [to avoid hitting Ivey]. It was unavoidable on her part."

The investigation into Ivey's death is ongoing and deputies are following up with medical personnel to determine the cause of his death.

Blood samples were taken from both the driver and the victim to determine if either was intoxicated at the time of the incident, although there is no indication drugs or alcohol were involved, police said.
