The Fayette County Commission is expected to drop its millage rate tomorrow night and provide some tax relief to citizens.

Fayette County finance director said he's recommending the County Commission lower the incorporated maintenance and operation from 7.116 mills to 6.819 mills. Pulliam also recommends the unincorporated rate be lowered to 5.869 mills from 6.198 mills, and lowering the fire tax from 3.582 mills to 3.391 mills.

The county government is one of the few in the county that's been able to survive the economy's downturn without having to raise its tax rate.

"We had some hard cutting to do, and if we had not cut a lot of items, we wouldn't have been able to lower the millage," Pulliam said.

The county approved a $66 million total budget in June, which is $1 million less than last year's budget.

"That's almost unprecedented in government," said Chairman Greg Dunn.

General funds account for $44.6 million, which is $319,000 less than last year's budget.

The county has also embarked on a $50 million capital improvement program that will be funded in the next several years.
