Mayor to proclaim Hispanic Heritage Month in PTC

At the City Council meeting in Peachtree City last night, Mayor Steve Brown was expected to proclaim Sept. 15-Oct. 15 as National Hispanic Heritage Month in Peachtree City.

Today, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 35 million people in the United States are of Hispanic origin. That's over 12 percent of the population. Peachtree City has seen a huge increase in its Hispanic population, increasing from 354 persons in 1990 to 1,184 persons in 2000, which is over a 300 percent increase in ten years.

Teaching of the contributions of Hispanic Americans, and learning about the cultures from which they come, will be the focal point of Hispanic Heritage Month. The Peachtree City Library will be leading the city in the celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month by holding the third annual "Fiesta on the Plaza" celebration slated for Saturday, Oct. 4, from 2-5:30 p.m. The event will be held at the municipal complex where the Library and City Hall are located and will feature live music by local band Spanish Flavor, ethnic dancing, cultural displays, as well as crafts and games for children.
