Sandy Creek student still critical after hit by car while in roadway

A Sandy Creek High School student remained in critical condition Thursday afternoon after he was struck by a vehicle on Jenkins Road Monday after school.

Joshua D. Ivey, 16, was in the middle of the road when he was struck by a 2001 VW Beetle driven by Sydney Grier Feemester, 16, also a student at Sandy Creek, police said.

Police do not expect to file charges on Feemester, who swerved to try and avoid Ivey but was unable to do so, according to police. Just before the incident, another vehicle had swerved to avoid striking Ivey in the road, according to the accident report filed by the Fayette County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies were summonned to the bridge on Jenkins Road that crosses the CSX railway at 3:50 p.m. Ivey was transported to Atlanta Medical Center by Rescue Air 1 medical helicopter after he was aided by the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

Blood samples were taken from both the driver and the victim to determine if either was intoxicated at the time of the incident, although there is no indication drugs or alcohol were involved, police said.
