County fire department re-accredited by agency

The annual accreditation compliance report of the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services has been approved by the Commission on Fire Accreditation International.

The approval allows the department to maintain its accreditation status until it must undergo another peer review audit to receive another five-year reaccreditation term.

Allen McCullough, deputy chief of the department, said the accreditation project has helped by creating a process of analysis and critical review of the services the department provides.

The accreditation program focuses on using measurable indicators to assure the department is meeting the community's needs, McCullough said.

The department was the first in Georgia to achieve national accreditation status from CFAI in 2000 after a process that took over two years to prepare for, officials said.

Jack Krakeel, Fayette County's director of public safety, which oversees the DFES, said the accreditation helps identify the risks and fire safety needs of communities. It also evaluates the performance of the organization and helps elevate the professionalism and level of service delivery, Krakeel said.

McCullough said the department receives customer service feedback weekly with questionnaires to those who receive Emergency Medical Services.

"We very much value the comments of those we serve," McCullough said. "We consistently receive the highest satisfaction ratings in medical care which is provided. We know that we have the continued support of our citizens, medical community and Board of Commissioners."

McCullough said it was also nice to have the department's initiatives validated by the CFAI.
