Georgia gets $10.6 M for AYP language ed

Gov. Sonny Perdue has accepted $10.6 million from the U.S. Department of Education to shore up the state's English language education efforts in schools that did not meet Adquate Yearly Progress last year.

The funds were presented by Dr. Maria Hernandez Ferrier, Director of the DOE Office of English Language Acquisition, during the swearing in ceremony for the Latino Commission for a New Georgia on Wednesday.

Georgia's population of Hispanic origin is more than four times greater than in 1990 according to the 2000 Census, and the state's population of Asian origin has more than doubled.

"Georgia's diversity is a positive selling point as we work to land the Free Trade Association of the Americas. These funds from the U.S. Department of Education will help strengthen our state's diversity by providing greater assistance for students learning English," said Perdue.

The $10.6 million in DOE funds are intended to assist that subgroup in schools where criteria for testing were not met.

Student records will be destroyed

The Exceptional Children's Services Department of the Fayette County School System has announced its intention to destroy outdated and unnecessary data and records on students on or after Dec. 30.

The action is in compliance with both the Georgia Special Education State Program Plan under the Individuals with Disabilities Act, and the Fayette County School System's policy outlined in the "Program for Exceptional Children Comprehensive Plan."

Records on students who were enrolled in a special education program and have graduated or withdrew from Fayette County schools, or have reached the age of 22 yars old, are no longer needed for educational planning purposes.

These records will be destroyed sometime around Dec. 30. Parents or students who desire a copy of their records should contact Connie Kelly at the Exceptional Children's Services Department, 770-460-3990, ext. 166.

Identification will be required to obtain any records.
