A Jonesboro man led sheriff's deputies on a brief chase early Saturday morning after he sped away from a safety and license check roadblock on Ga. Highway 138 north, police said.

Dwayne White, 29, sped away from the roadblock after a deputy noticed the odor of alcohol and White's bloodshot eyes and asked him to pull to the side of the road at the checkpoint, said Sgt. Belinda McCastle of the Fayette County Sheriff's Department. White led deputies into a subdivision under construction, running between two houses, scaling a fence and dashing into a field. McCastle said.

Deputies caught up with White as he was hanging from the second floor window of a house under construction, McCastle said.

White is charged with driving under the influence, fleeing and attempting to elude a police officer, obstruction of a police officer, failure to maintain lane, reckless driving, driving with a suspended license and driving without a seat belt.

The vehicle chase did not reach high speeds, McCastle added.
