Coweta getting state road money

Governor Sonny Perdue announced Thursday details of a $324 million Guaranteed Revenue Bond package passed during the last legislative session.

The package includes money for arterial road improvement in Metro Atlanta and GRIP projects throughout the state.

Perdue made the announcement during a joint meeting of the Marietta Kiwanis Club and Marietta Rotary Club.

Funding for arterial road projects in the metro non-attainment area; Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Paulding, Rockdale, will relieve congestion in the high density traffic bottlenecks that counties have targeted as top priorities for improvements.

Funding for the GRIP projects will improve connectivity between transportation corridors in rural Georgia to help spur economic development by providing faster and more efficient access to major roadways.

"We are funding transportation projects that will increase mobility for Metro area commuters stuck in traffic," said Perdue. "And the GRIP projects that we have targeted will improve access to major roadways which is critical for the economic development of rural Georgia."

This bond package is part of an overall "Georgia Gets Going" transportation bond package totaling $424 million. Perdue plans to announce specific projects included in the General Obligation Bond package totaling almost $100 million Sept. 8 and details of his telecommuting program on Tuesday, September 9, 2003.

There will be a total of $2.15 billion in transportation funds appropriated in FY04 including the Guaranteed Revenue Bond package. Approximately half is spent in the Metro non-attainment counties and half is spent in throughout the state.

Ga. Highway 16 at Witcher/Glover;Ga. Highway 154 at Hammock and Vaughn; U.S. Highway 29 at Tanglewood and Hal Jones $176,000.
