Local forestry ranger helps with wildfires in western United StatesA ranger with the local unit of the Georgia Forestry Commission is in Idaho to assist with halting wildfires that have broken out there. Ken Parker is one of a number of GFC rangers who will serve a total of 14 days. Currently he is assigned to a fire in northern Idaho, five miles from the town of Kamiah, but he could be reassigned to another area as crews manage to contain the wildfires. GFC personnel are rained for wildland firefighting not only in Georgia but are well prepared to work the rugged conditions presented by western states. The GFC maintains a formal working agreement with the U.S. Forest Service to provide personnel for cooperative fire protection nationwide. Georgia is also a member of the Southeastern Compact (U.S. Forest Service) along with ten other states to provide personnel when needed regionally.
