PTC teen charged after wiping out to avoid school bus

A 16-year-old driver was cited for wrecking his car after swerving to avoid hitting an oncoming school bus head-on at the end of the first week of school, police said.

The incident occurred at the entrance to the Calgary Place subdivision on Braelinn Road, according to the accident report. Stephen Joseph Duhon's 1999 Mercury Cougar was traveling at least 63 mph in a 40 mph zone, police determined.

Duhon, of Peachtree City, was charged with speeding, failure to maintain lane, reckless driving and failure to yes a seat belt, police said. One of two passengers in his vehicle suffered a broken jaw and a possible brain injury, the report indicated.

The other passenger was uninjured and was able to walk home, the report stated.

Although Duhon avoided colliding with the bus, his vehicle veered off the road onto the cart path, striking three trees before coming to rest, police said.

Duhon told a police officer that his "shoe got stuck" which caused the accident.
