Fville Main St. committee to review all downtown development permits

Fayetteville's Main Street Advisory Committee just got a little extra responsibility.

The City Council voted last week to have the committee review all permit requests that would have an impact on the Main Street Architectural Overlay District.

The committee has been doing so informally for a while now, noted Jahnee Prince, the city's director of planning and zoning. The plans brought to the committee have been improved with the input of the committee, she added.

The committee will now review all permits for construction, remodeling, additions or rehabilitation projects, Prince said. The committee will also review sign permits in the district.

Council also approved rezoning a 1.3-acre parcel along Jimmie Mayfield Boulevard near the Fayette County Justice Center from residential to office-institutional rezoning.

In other news, council denied sign variance requests for the Walgreen's pharmacy on Ga. Highway 85 South and the Ted's Montana Grill, which will be opening soon near Fayette Pavilion. Walgreen's wanted to change their sign so more specials could be advertised and Ted's representatives wanted to have neon on one of its signs.

Council did approve, however, a variance for new signage at Guthrie Plaza, which is under new ownership and will be undergoing a renovation soon. The site, which is just north of the Fayette Promenade retail center, would have similar signage on a brick wall instead of the current sign which is not as aesthetically pleasing.
