Agents try their hand at home building

Metro Brokers/GMAC Real Estate's float was a hit in the annual Peachtree City Fourth of July parade, which drew more than 15,000 spectators.

The float was the product of two weeks of blood, sweat and laughs that transformed 18 sales associates from the Peachtree City office, located at 2100 Ga. Highway 54 East, into homebuilders.

On the suggestion of Ken Mills and Grady Dorn of the Peachtree City office, the group set out to build a 10-foot wide by 12-foot tall house using everyday homebuilding materials such as real Hardiplank siding, roofing shingles, windows and shutters. No details were overlooked, either: The house featured custom-made curtains, a white picket fence and real flowers and sod planted around it.

Metro Mike, the company mascot, even got involved by posing for pictures with kids while associates gave out candy and balloons.

With Dorn's backyard serving as construction headquarters, he said jokingly, "I only had to report one OSHA violation." Harold Chapline (office manager Pat Chapline's husband) was sawing pickets for the fence when he cut his index finger and made a three-hour detour to the emergency room on the night before the parade. Luckily, only stitches were required (13, to be exact).

As soon as Chapline returned home, he went right back to work and stayed up until almost 4 a.m. to complete the fence in time. Later, he was consoled during the parade by Metro Mike who, like most mascots, has only four finger holes in the glove of his costume.

Said Mike: "I almost had the perfect stand-in."
