Wednesday, August 13, 2003 Wieland donates home to mission John Wieland Homes & Neighborhoods and HomeAid Atlanta have announced the donation of the Second Mile Home to Atlanta Union Mission in honor of the 20th anniversary of Wieland's Second Mile program, the company's charitable arm through which company members donate not only money and gifts but also time and energy to a wide array of community outreach programs. Wieland company members and trade partners will construct the home as an addition to the Misson's Village Atlanta campus. With a value estimated at $1 million, the roughly 8,600-square-foot facility will house a total of eleven apartment units to provide safe transitional housing for women and children. Each of the units (three two-bedroom and the rest one-bedroom) will include its own kitchen, dining area and private bath. The home also includes common gathering areas for residents, laundry facilities and will be fully handicapped accessible. Atlanta Union Mission was founded in 1938 as a shelter for the hungry and homeless. It has since evolved into the largest and most comprehensive provider of homeless services in the Southeast. As many as 975 men, women and children are housed in the Mission's centers each night receiving shelter, nutritious meals and warm clothing. Located in College Park, Village Atlanta became part of Atlanta Union Mission in 1992 and has been the center for the Women's and Children's Services, providing recovery programs, transitional housing, child care and counseling for both women and their children. A sponsor of the Second Mile Home project, HomeAid Atlanta is the local chapter of HomeAid America, a nonprofit organization formed in 1989 by a group of builders to address the critical need for transitional housing for the temporarily homeless. Now the largest provider of transitional housing in the country, HomeAid enlists the help of builders, developers and trade partners nationwide to donate talent, resources and materials to the building of shelters for the homeless in their communities. Newly launched in the local community, HomeAid Atlanta operates under the auspices of the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association, focusing on the needs of the temporarily homeless population throughout Greater Atlanta. Founded in 1970, John Wieland Homes & Neighborhoods is currently building in 25 neighborhoods across Atlanta. Named "National Builder of the Year" and "National Housing Quality Award Winner", the company is the Southeast's leading builder of move-up homes. While having a long-standing commitment to community development and involvement in the Atlanta Metro area, John Wieland Homes & Neighborhoods company members donate not only money and gifts, but also their personal time and energy by building homes for Habitat for Humanity, participating in fund-raising events, tutoring children and much much more through the company's Second Mile program.
