County to PTC:Don't blame us for budget problems By JOHN
THOMPSON
The Fayette County Commission Wednesday afternoon blasted Peachtree City officials for blaming their budget woes on the county. "There was no money taken from the cities last year and only $89,000 from Peachtree City next year," said Commissioner A.G. VanLandingham. Commission Chairman Greg Dunn said the value of one mill in Peachtree City is about $1.4 million, so it's ridiculous to blames the city's fiscal woes on the renegotiations of sales tax dollars that occurred earlier this year. County officials were so incensed about the "untruths" spread by Peachtree City officials, they decided to go public with their statements Thursday. In a press release issued from the Board of Commissioners Thursday, county officials offered an analysis of a typical Peachtree City tax bill was offered. In sales tax credits, the county's credits rise in 2004 from $217.12 to $221.32, or an increase of $4.20. For the same period, Peachtree City's portion of the tax credit drops from $44.45 to $431.85, or $12.60. The total sales tax credit Peachtree City loses is $8.40. But, the release states, the loss of sales tax dollars pales in comparison to the tax increase Peachtree City is looking at charging residents. "The proposed property tax increase for city taxes would increase by about $87.73 or more than 10 times the dollar impact resulting from the redistribution of the local option sales tax," reads the release. "They're just saying untruths about this board," said Commissioner Herb Frady.
