County questions proposed road work

The widening of Lower Fayetteville Road was thrown into question Tuesday as the Coweta County Commission questioned the wisdom of the action.

The county is slated to get $6 million in funds from the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority to fix and widen the road. The funds are part of the $10 million the county is getting from the transportation superagency in agreement for allowing express buses to run from the county to the airport.

With the road becoming the hot spot for growth in the eastern part of the county, the County Commission agreed curves needed straightening. But widening?

"I just don't see what good adding two feet to each side of the road is going to do," said Commission Chairman Leigh Schlumper.

Commissioner Robert Wood also questioned whether it would add to the safety aspect of the road and Sheriff Mike Yeager was quick with an answer.

"There are some places on that road that if you go off the road, you're in a creek because there are no guardrails," he said.

Yeager said two feet makes a huge difference in safety conditions on the road since it would allow drivers a little leeway if they veer off the road.

Instead of turning down the request to prepare engineering documents for the road, the County Commission decided to table the issue for two weeks until they received further information about the project.
