A Hampton man was arrested Sunday morning after he went to a residence in north Fayette County and shot at another man who was backing out of the driveway, police said.

Howard F. Waldrop, 47, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault and one count of damage to property in the second degree, according to police. Waldrop was also charged with possession of a weapon within a school safety zone since after the shooting he retreated to First Christian Church of Tyrone, on Jenkins Road, which is within 1,000 feet of Flat Rock Middle School, police said.

The victim shot back at Waldrop during the confrontation but no one was injured, police said.

Waldrop told police that he thought his ex-girlfriend was being held against her will at a residence on Jenkins Road after he talked to her at 3 a.m., according to a report filed by the Fayette County Sheriff's Department.

After the confrontation, Waldrop fled into the woods nearby and dumped a rifle, a handgun and a pistol before he was taken into custody by a Tyrone police officer who responded to the scene, according to the report.

One gun was found in a bush behind the church, another near the church's playground and the other in a wooded area, police said.
