Betty Layson Mills
Betty Layson Mills, 71, Fayetteville,, died July 14, 2003. She was born April 11, 1932 in Montezuma, Ga. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star. Services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel with the Rev. Frank Ellis officiating. Interment was at Camp Memorial Park, Fayetteville. Survivors include her husband, David T. Mills, Fayetteville; children, Vickey and Joey Clay, Grayson, Daniel Layson, New York, New York, and Paula and Tommy Lawson, Peachtree City; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Randall Shirah, Hampton; and sisters, Mae and Kenneth Sharp, Sharpsburg, and Joyce and Willie Middlebrooks, Ellaville. Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home, Fayetteville, was in charge.
Katherine Ceceilia Cowan
Katherine Ceceilia Cowan, 93, Fayetteville, died July 15, 2003. She was born July 19, 1909 in Los Angeles, Calif. She was the daughter of Alvin and Amanda Platt. She had been a legal and executive secretary for the Southern Pacific Railroad. She loved flower arranging, interior decorating and antique collecting. Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Marion Cowan, Fayetteville; a son, Roger Cowan, Fayetteville; a nephew, Harold Weber, Cloverdale, Calif.; nieces, Ann Leonard, Paso Robles, Calif., Joan Farrar, Litchfield, Ariz., and Jane Hopkins, San Diego, Calif.; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Metro Crematory, Peachtree City, was in charge.
James McGowan Baughman Jr.
James McGowan Baughman Jr., 83, Fayetteville, died July 21, 2003. He was born Jan. 12, 1920 in Screven County, Ga. He was a retired captain from the Fulton County Sheriff's office. Graveside services were at Holly Hill Memorial Park, Fairburn. Survivors include a daughter, Debbie and James Baughman Bratcher, Locust Grove; sisters, Corine Zittrouer, Savannah, Helen Gilbert, Fayetteville, and Frances Lockwood, Stockbridge; grandchildren, Michelle Davis and Jennifer Davis; and two great-grandchildren. Parrott Funeral Home, Fairburn, was in charge.
William Travis Siddons
William “Travis” Siddons, 17, Fairburn, Fayette County, died July 25, 2003. He was born Dec. 3, 1985 in Fulton County. Services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel with the Rev. James E. Fant Jr., and Jose Cubas officiating. Interment was at Brooks Memorial Cemetery. Survivors include his mother, Millie F. Siddons, Fayetteville; father, Bill Siddons, Fayetteville; a brother, Jacob “Jake” Siddons, Fayetteville; grandparents, Donald Fitzpatrick and Joanne Ellis Fitzpatrick, both of Fayetteville. Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home, Fayetteville, was in charge.
Gould E. Bernard
Gould E. Bernard, 89, Peachtree City, died July 21, 2003. He was born Feb. 3, 1914 in DeKalb County, Ga. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Doris M. Bernard, and a daughter, Barbara Jean Hedden. He was retired from Union Carbide Chemical Company with 44 years of service as a chemical salesman. He was past president of the Atlanta Chemical Sales Club. He was a member of the American Chemical Society, the Peachtree City United Methodist Church and the Peachtree City Kiwanis Club. He enjoyed golf and hunting.
A memorial service was at Peachtree City United Methodist Church with the Rev. Chuck Hodges and the Rev. Betsy Haas officiating. Survivors include a son-in-law, Richard B. Hedden; and grandchildren, Trisha Hedden, Erica Singlar, Jason Bernard and Brittney Bernard. James Barfield
James Barfield, 79, Tyrone, died July 24, 2003. He was born June 23, 1924 in Fulton County. Graveside services were at Sherwood Memorial Park, Jonesboro, with the Rev. Raymond Barfield officiating. Survivors include sons, John Rick Barfield, Tyrone, and Jimmy Barfield, Sturgis, Mich.; a daughter, Carol Arnold, Fayetteville; a brother, the Rev. Raymond Barfield, Marietta; and four grandchildren.
