Kiwanis makes donation to Iraq relief effortBy CAROLYN
CARY
"Operation Fred" is a loosely knit organization in Fayette County that has been supplying Major Frederick P. Wellman school and medical supplies. The Peachtree City resident is currently an operations officer for a Blackhawk helicopter battalion assigned to the 101st Airborne Division in northern Iraq. The village near him is without a clinic or a school and he appealed to friends in Fayette County to contribute supplies. At this point over 1,200 pounds of supplies have been sent, totaling 63 boxes. However, all postage has been paid by individuals, with one concerned citizen paying over $600 themselves. The Metro Fayette Kiwanis has donated money to help with the postage as well as individual members helping. Anyone wishing to send supplies or donate funds for postage can write to "Operation Fred", in care of Carol Fritz, 416 Dartmouth Place East, Peachtree City, GA 30269. Metro Kiwanis member Jim Steinbach, co-chair of its Spiritual and Human Values committee, spearheaded the effort.
