$125M sales tax vote in Fayette's future? By JOHN THOMPSON
Now that Fayette's transportation plan has been revealed, a nagging question has emerged: How will the county pay for it? County public works director Lee Hearn said county officials are still "kicking ideas around," but one of the ideas that has emerged is a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. "With a five-year SPLOST, we could raise between $100-125 million for these projects," Hearn said. Many of the projects unveiled in the plan are eligible for state and federal funds, but Hearn said the county often has to come up with matching funds. Possible dates for a SPLOST vote include this November's election, but Hearn said the commissioners are looking towards next year's primary election. Fayette County has turned down several SPLOST proposals in the past.
