PTC police recertified by state

The Peachtree City Police Department has been recertified through the state of Georgia, it was announced Tuesday at the annual Georgia Chiefs of Police Association.

The department was first certified on the state level in July 1998. The department meets 111 standards set out for the state level, said Police Chief James Murray.

The state certification process is tailored specifically to address Georgia laws and regulations unlike the more stringent national accreditation standards which the department also meets, Murray said.

The state certification is a good "stepping stone" for smaller departments to achieve before they seek national accreditation, Murray said.

"I think it's a great program for all police departments and sheriff's departments to get into," Murray said. "State certification has been great for a lot of small departments who didn't really have good policy manuals and procedures."

Departments who achieve state certification also find it easier to work together when necessary, Murray said.

"It really helps keep everybody on the same sheet of music," Murray said.

Peachtree City was one of nine police departments to receive their re-certification, Murray said.

The certification involved an on-site inspection of the department that was completed in October.

The department also expects to receive re-accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies in November. The department was assessed by CALEA in April and was found to be in full compliance with all applicable standards, police said.
