Local resident recognized for service in Iraq
Fayette County resident Byers Coleman was recently recognized for his service in Kuwait during Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. Coleman was awarded the Department of the Army's Superior Civilian Service Award at an awards ceremony July 17 at Headquarters, Combined Land Forces Component Command Headquarters, Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. A retired Army officer, he is employed as a civilian contractor on the staff of Third Army, Ft McPherson. He is responsible for planning and implementing satellite based systems allowing realtime tracking of vehicles and supplies throughout twelve countries in the US Central Command theater. These systems allow logistics managers to "see" material moving through ports, airfields, road and rail networks to ensure that needed supplies arrive at the proper destination in time to support combat operations. The vehicle tracking systems also enable commanders to report problems, route convoys around traffic, avoid enemy concentrations, report accidents and call for combat support and medical assistance.
