Local blood drive turnout applauded

Officials from the American Red Cross were pleased with the turnout to Sunday's blood drive at Fayetteville First United Methodist Church.

A total of 88 pints were collected during the drive, although officials had hoped to get 97 pints.

Still, given the summer shortage in the blood supply, the effort from local residents was much needed, officials said.

Earlier this week, supplies of the most common blood type, O-positive, were down to a half-day's supply, said Cammie Barnes of the American Red Cross. There was also less than a day's supply of O-negative also, Barnes said.

The Red Cross tries to keep three full days worth of blood supply on hand to meet the needs of local hospitals, she said.
