Appointees to the United States Air Force Academy reported for basic training June 26. Eleven residents of Fayette County were among those who received appointments to the Air Force Academy Class of 2007, including at least one student from all four existing public high schools in the county and one from nearby Landmark Christian.

By the end of their first day, the "Doolies," as they are called their first year, had recieved haircuts and immunizations and had been issued uniforms and personal items. The next day, they were sworn in as active duty members of the U.S. Air Force and began six weeks of rigorous training.

They spend the first three weeks on the campus of the Academy in a variety of physical fitness, team-building and militar training exercises. The second half of basic training is spent at Jack's Valley, a five-mile march from campus. Here, the new cadets will live in tnents for three weeks, drill on the obstacle and combat assault courses and continue their military training.

Those who complete basic training will be accpeted Aug. 5 into the U.S. Air Force Academy cadet wing as fourth class cadets. The next day, they will start their academic year.

Each of these future Air Force officers and aspiring pilots received a scholarship valued at more than $300,000 over four years.
