Appeal of Georgian Park car wash denial to be heard by PTC Council

Developers of a proposed 24-hour car wash in the Georgian Park neighborhood off Ga. Highway 74 North will appeal a Planning Commission denial of their conceptual site plan when the Peachtree City Council meets Thursday.

OMNI Consulting wants to build the freestanding facility at the intersection of Georgian Park and Newgate Road, near the Holiday Inn Express and across the street from a Shell gas station and convenience store.

Because it would be self-service and not staffed, the car wash would, in theory, be open 24 hours a reality that did not sit well with residents across the street in the St. Simon's Cove subdivision and Georgian Park condo development.

They turned out in strong numbers at the June planning meeting to voice their displeasure with the project, particularly the potential for light glare at all hours of the night.

Though the business is permitted for the zoning classification, the planners denied the request.

Since that time, OMNI has revised its conceptual plan and provided additional information to the city about the proposed development, said city planner David Rast. "The fact it will be located across the street from established residential developments warrants special consideration."

In a memo to city staff, councilmembers and planning commissioners regarding the site plan, Rast suggests it be approved by the council with residents from each of the housing developments, as well as two planning members, working with the developer to monitor the construction and help to minimize the impact on the neighborhood.

The meeting is at 7 p.m. Thursday in council chambers at City Hall, Willowbend Road at Ga. Highway 54.

The agenda is heavy with other business as well:

The council will consider appointing Dennis Payton to fill a vacancy on the Planning Commission, after a panel of interviewers considered 10 applications for the post.

City staff is proposing the council authorize Mayor Steve Brown to sign a Project Management Agreement for the Ga. Highway 54 West multiuse bridge and gateway feature, a key component of the "Livable Centers Initiative" program to beautify the westward gateway to the city. Though it is listed under the "Consent Agenda" portion of Thursday's agenda, it is likely to receive discussion among councilmembers as the long-anticipated Hwy. 54 widening project draws nearer to its planned November start date.

The council will weigh the architectural contract for designing an addition to the city library, adjacent to City Hall.

Picking up an item tabled from the July 3 meeting, the council will discuss adoption of an official city slogan from among three finalists nominated by city employees. Councilmember Murray Weed proposed adoption of a catchphrase for the city during the council's winter retreat.

The council is also scheduled to present trophies to the winners of the July 4 parade contest and honor veterans of the Korean War on the 50 anniversary of that conflict.
