Flat Rock AME welcomes new minister

Members of Flat Rock AME Church welcomed its new minister in a unique way, by holding a fish fry.

The Rev. Edward J. Johnson Jr. and his wife, Dr. Vanessa Johnson, participated in the outdoor cookout with Providence looking down upon them. It had rained all day until just before the welcoming party was to begin.

Both of the Johnsons are Navy retirees. He is pursing his master's of divinity degree and she is an assistant principal with the Fulton County schools.

Flat Rock is the oldest African-American church in Fayette County and can count its beginning in the 1850s.

As a retired Naval commander, the Rev. Johnson feels that he can provide excellent leadership to the church family and congregation. "I count on the spiritual enlightenment from the Holy Spirit to ensure God's people are given spiritual inspiration and hope," he said.

While he wants to develop various outreach ministries, he says the first priority is to rebuild spiritual lives and energize Flat Rock AME so it can be more effective in reaching the lost, the last, and the least of God's people.

The church is located at 148 Old Chapel Lane, behind the new United States Postal distribution center on Ga. Highway 54. Bible study is Wednesdays at 7 p.m., church school is Sunday morning at 10 a.m., and worship services are at 11 a.m.

For information on the church's ministries call the Rev. Johnson at 770-460-6446 or the church at 770-461-0283.
