A 14-year-old Fayetteville boy was injured Tuesday afternoon when he was struck by a vehicle on Hood Avenue near the entrance to the Gingercake Landings subdivision.

The boy was taken by medical helicopter to Atlanta Medical Center for treatment due to the extent of his injuries and the way he was injured, said Capt. Pete Nelms of the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

According to the Fayette County Sheriff's Department, Andrew Breest, 14, of Fayetteville was struck by a 1994 Pontiac Firebird while trying to cross the road after retrieving a scooter. The driver of the car had swerved around another boy on the right side of the road and did not see Breest, who tried to cross the road from the driver's left, said Lt. Col. Wayne Hannah of the Fayette County Sheriff's Department.

Breest's head struck the windshield of the vehicle, police said.

Hannah said he didn't expect charges to be filed against the driver of the car, Mary Pyritz, 41, of Fayetteville.

Breest suffered from head injuries which were not believed to be life threatening, Hannah said.

Aaron O'Toole, 14, said he and Breest were playing with the scooter when the incident happened. O'Toole said the car swerved to avoid him before Breest was struck.
