Red Cross honors Sandy Creek graduate

The Metropolitan Atlanta Chapter of the American Red Cross honored Sandy Creek High School graduate Braelyn Turner of Tyrone as one of five recipients of the Youth Volunteer Scholarship Award. To be eligible for the award, youth volunteers must attend a Red Cross orientation and have completed a minimum of 150 hours of volunteer service at the Red Cross and/or other agencies. A minimum of 75 hours must be served at the Red Cross.

Turner and the other scholarship winners were recognized at the Red Cross' annual meeting where they, as well as many other Red Cross volunteers, were honored for their community involvement.

The 2003 graduate was actively involved in a number of extra-curricular activities and positions at Sandy Creek. He was co-organizer of a mock election for the Student Senate and also helped organize a shoebox drive to send toiletries to local children in need. In addition to his school participation, Turner also spent time volunteering at the Union Grove Baptist Church as a youth leader, and at Tyrone Elementary School as a mentor.

The majority of his Red Cross volunteering was conducted at the South Metro Red Cross Service Center in Morrow, where Volunteer Coordinator Tamara Cruz-Mattos recalls him seldom missing a meeting, and always enjoyed his enthusiasm.

"[Braelyn] has shown true leadership and provided a good example to his peers by his actions," said Cruz-Mattos. "He has proven himself to be a strong role model as a leader."

With more than 250 hours of volunteer hours accumulated, Turner intends on using his experience as a stepping-stone towards a college degree. He will soon begin his first year at Georgia State University where he plans on pursuing a double-major in business management and accounting. "With these degrees I plan on starting a career in entrepeneurship," Turner said.

The new college freshman also praised the Red Cross for its influence on his life. "Red Cross has shown me that all people are to be treated equally. Through business I will be able to offer equality."
