PTC Council to consider rainwater runoff idea

Carl DeGiorgio moved to Peachtree City from New York more than 20 years ago, but holds onto his distinct Yankee accent and is proud to have served as the town's chief cable television installer for many years.

But it wasn't until this spring that his yard, at the corner of Steven's Entry and Hamilton Road, started washing away. Record rainfall uncovered long-forgotten natural runoff patterns or carved out new ones all over the city. Heavy rainfall runoff from the street now pours onto DeGiorgio's property, and his driveway is collapsing.

It's situations like DeGiorgio's that the city hopes to fix and prevent through the creation of a Storm water Management Utility, a new city agency that might get initial funding in the upcoming FY'04 city budget.

The Peachtree City Council will consider funding a feasibility study on the storm water utility at its regular meeting Thursday night.

City Manager Bernard McMullen is advocating the utility, which would also help shore up the city's infrastructure. For example, last week work crews finally were able to complete repairs to the roadbed and approach to the Flat Creek bridge on Smoke Rise Trace, just north of Lake Kedron. It washed away in a deluge of flood waters during the June 17 early morning storms.

City staffers admit the storm water utility concept is just in the earliest stages and will require more study.

Meantime, the council will hear another water-related issue Thursday when it considers a request from the county water system to lower the level in Lake Peachtree in November in December.

The lake level is annually lowered for a period of time so homeowners with docks or boats along the shore can do routine maintenance.

In other business Thursday, the council will:

·Consider an agreement with the county for the reconstruction and improvement of Stallings Road, a gravel lane south of Falcon Field Airport.

· Consider a change in the alcohol licenses for Hangar 74 bar and grill.

· Hear an update on the court ruling affecting golf cart drivers.

The council meets at 7 p.m. Thursday in council chambers at City Hall.
