New F'ville police HQ planned for Southside By JOHN MUNFORD
Although $5.25 million has been set aside for a new police headquarters and city courthouse for Fayetteville, the facility has not yet been designed. The location has already been picked, however: land for the new building has already been purchased on the east side of Jimmie Mayfield Boulevard at its intersection with Bradley Drive. The site is just north of the boulevard's intersection with Ga. Highway 92 South. The city hopes to have the request for proposals for the design and construction of the building ready in about a month, said Maj. Steve Ledbetter of the Fayetteville Police Department. There is no more room left to expand in the department's current facility on Johnson Avenue at Ga. Highway 85, Ledbetter said. "We are completely maxed out," Ledbetter said. The department is interested in having more room to process evidence, Ledbetter said. The addition of a holding cell for prisoners would allow security to be enhanced during court session, Ledbetter added. Currently, prisoners from the jail are put on the front row during municipal court, which puts them close to the general public, Ledbetter said. If there was an area to hold the prisoners, officers could rotate the prisoners in and out as necessary, he added. The holding cell would also cut down on the manpower needed to transport prisoners from the Fayette County Jail, Ledbetter said.
