Annexation, rezoning for hospital closer to approval

Fayette Community Hospital is one step closer to getting approval for an annexation and rezoning for its planned building expansion.

The matters were posted for their first reading at last week's meeting of the Fayetteville City Council, and they will be voted on at the council's next meeting July 17.

Officials plan to build three outlying buildings on the new parcel which is adjacent to the western boundary of the hospital's current property line. A large amount of the development will be accounted for with parking spaces.

Hospital officials have said they would like to expand the services it can offer to local residents.

The Fayette County Commission has decided not to oppose the rezoning, which was sought so the buildings could be serviced by Fayetteville's sewer system. The county, however, has passed on a list of suggestions to the city for development of the property.

Mayor Ken Steele said the hospital has been "a Godsend to our community" and in addition to providing key services is also outstanding architecture-wise.
