Former PTC man asks for help with medical, school supplies for Iraqi villages A former Peachtree City resident serving in Iraq is seeking the help of local residents in donating medical and school supplies to help several villages near where he is based in northern Iraq. Maj. Fred Wellman is trying to help a doctor there set up a small medical clinic, which is no easy task since they have little medication and supplies. Wellman said they are in need of most basic medical supplies and over-the-counter medication. Wellman's effort, aided by friends in Peachtree City, was undertaken after he met a local doctor seeking assistance. According to Wellman, the more supplies the better since more Iraqi people can be helped. "I know this is a huge order, but this stuff would be going to a great cause of helping some good, hardworking country folks here in Iraq," Wellman said. Medicine needed ranges from non-aspirin painkillers such as Tylenol, Motrin and Aleve (for adults, children and infants) to various antihistamines and antacids. Also needed are multivitamins and antibacterial ointments. Basic school supplies needed include notebooks, pencils, pens, chalk, erasers, backpacks, construction paper, scissors, tape and glue. Also needed are used kids athletic shoes, soccer balls and volleyballs. "There simply cannot be too many of these items and there are several villages that need help," Wellman said. U.S. troops in the area will be building the clinic and a school to serve the area, Wellman noted. Supplies can be dropped off at any Peachtree City or Fayette County fire station. Money is also needed to pay for shipping of the supplies, and an account has been opened at The Bank of Georgia for "Operation Fred." Checks may be made out to "Operation Fred" and mailed to 416 Dartmouth Place East, Peachtree City, Ga. 30269.
