The odyssey to open Coweta County's newest charter school is almost complete.

Officials at the Odyssey School are hopeful of getting 45 more students registered so the school can open this fall.

Odyssey School president Cam Tidwell said the school must have 200 students enrolled by the end of this weekend. Final registration is tomorrow from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at Sharpsburg Baptist Church.

"We especially need students in grades 4 through 8, however we will take enrollments in all grades and place the overflow on our short waiting list," said Tidwell.

If the school gets the additional 45 students, it will open this fall at Sharpsburg Baptist Church. Tidwell said Darrel Ervin, who previously taught math at East Coweta Middle School and won a teacher of the year award, has been selected as principal.

Tidwell said the school will use a unique educational approach.

"Odyssey will have multi-grade grouping which fosters teacher-student relationships and student to student relationships. Odyssey School is striving to create a different environment in which the teachers, parents, and students all work as a team, or family, to create a loving, caring, and nurturing learning environment for all students," she said.

Odyssey has tried for years to get certified as a charter school, but always ran into roadblocks. Charter schools allow more parental involvement in curriculum choices, but are still funded as public schools.

Tidwell urges all residents who are interested in this unique educational offering to call 770-304-9585 for more information.
