Tyrone Town Council approves new budgetBy MICHAEL
BOYLAN
With very little fanfare, the Tyrone Town Council adopted the 2003/2004 budget last Thursday night. What does deserve fanfare, though, is the fact that there is no change in the millage rate for the citizens of Tyrone. The current millage rate is 2.9 mills, which was adopted by the council last year to offet the loss of the Local Option Sales Tax. The town will spend $2,689,843 this year and $175,000 of that is for capital improvement projects. This year's scheduled capital improvement projects are the street program, which $60,000 is budgeted for and the lighting of two fields at Handley Park to the tune of $115,000. The street program will spend $45,000 on road patching and $15,000 on road resurfacing. A commercial paving company will patch various streets before resurfacing within the town's limits. Among the notable elements of the proposed revenue for this year's budget are a 400-percent increase in alcoholic beverage licenses, which produced $3,200 more revenue than last year and a 192 percent increase in background check fees, which gave the town $9,200 extra dollars this year. The town also carried $68,362 forward from last year's budget.
