Nearly 200 come out for local cleanup

Coweta County saw some 188 volunteers give 504 hours of their time as part of the 2003 Great American Cleanup campaign. This year's volunteers included 116 teens and 31 adults who helped withcleanup projects coordinated by the 4-H Club.

The volunteers cleande up some 27 1/2 miles of roadway and one illegal dumpsite resulting in 4,030 pounds of trash being removed from our environment.

Included were some unusual items including grocery carts, car hoods, and lottery tickets. The most frequently found items were beer bottles, drink cans, cigarette packs, and fast food containers.

Groups who volunteered for the 2003 cleanup and beautificationcampaign included the Newnan Boys and Girls Club Keystone Club which had members work on the yards for three elderly residents planting grass and flowers as well as general cleanup; the 4-H Clean The Streams program had team members and adults clean up a streamin Newnan near Pebble Beach Lane; Scout Troop #48 Eagle Patrol: Welcome Stationcleaned a roadway in Moreland; Coweta County Employees cleaned some 6 miles of roadway with some volunteers cleaning a cemetary; The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints cleaned and beautified the area around Ruth Hill School; the Arbor Springs Elementary School Environmental Club prepared beds for spring planting, recycled computer cartridges.

The club members also sponsored an Earth Day contest; and Arnco-Sargent fourth-graders sponsored by Georgia Power's Environmental Committee planted trees and flowers and picked up trash.

The 2003 effort to Keep Coweta Beautiful was a huge success with backing from the Coweta County Board of Commissioners and groups countywide.The effortcan be builtupon in upcoming years to make sure Coweta County is always clean and beautiful.
