Cleveland to chair Coweta group

Coweta's newest government group has a new leader.

The Coweta Intergovernmental Association elected Senoia Mayor Dianne Cleveland as its chairman Tuesday afternoon.

The association was formed after the idea was broached at the Coweta government retreat earlier in the spring. The group is supposed to help all of Coweta's governments in their future planning and coordinate efforts among the many jurisdictions.

One of the big issues many of the leaders want to see accomplished is better communication with the Coweta County Board of Education.

School board chairman Rick Melville agreed, but noted some of the school board's abilities are tied by state laws.

"If we know a major subdivision is going to be built in the next five years, we can't go ahead and build a school. We can't build classrooms that will sit empty," he said.

Melville did say he would love to see some of these large developments donate lands for future schools, but the land cost is still a small portion of the cost.

In addition to naming Cleveland as chairman, the group settled on a meeting date. All future meetings will be on the third Wednesday of each month at 4 p.m. and will rotate to different jurisdictions. The next meeting will be July 16 in Senoia.
