Sandy Creek teacher selected by Air Force as outstanding instructor

After completing a successful inaugural year with the county's first Air Force Junior ROTC program at Sandy Creek High, Master Sgt. Karvellis Lee learned that the United States Air Force had selected him as one of 172 outstanding instructors for 2002-2003.

Recently released results of the Air Force's competitive board, which evaluated instructors from over 744 units nationwide and overseas, names Lee as being among the top 10 percent of instructors in the entire AFJROTC program. In selecting instructors for this honor, the board evaluates program management, development of the unit, creative presentation of the curriculum, relations with the school/community and accomplishment of program objectives. The individual's annual evaluation report is also considered.

Sandy Creek Principal Roy Rabold presented the certificate and citation to Lee May 27 during the year-end faculty meeting. In making the presentation Rabold praised Lee's performance.

"Master Sgt. Lee has been recognized as one of the outstanding Air Force Junior ROTC instructors from over 744 units worldwide. This is quite an accomplishment and honor for a first-year program and our school to have him recognized. I am extremely proud of his accomplishment and what he brings to our program," Rabold said.

Lee was instrumental in several of the unit's noteworthy achievements. Within the first 30 days of starting the program, he had the entire 110 cadets fitted and in uniform for an impressive 9/11 ceremony held before the entire student body. The cadet color guard performed at 25 school events including sports and school functions as well as held a food drive that collected over 1,500 canned goods for the needy.

Lee also led the cadets in a project to collect state flags. AFJROTC students worked to obtain all 50 flags, which will be displayed in the Sandy Creek High School commons area.

Lee's classroom instruction included lessons on responsibility, which covered developing an individual budget and understanding the consequences of personal actions. Cadets also had the opportunity to go on field trips to see the F/A-22 production operations at Lockheed Corporation and view aviation history at the Aviation Museum in Warner Robins.
