Bridge out in Smokerise

Monday night's rains washed out the support structure for the auto bridge crossing the Flat Creek tributory in Smokerise Plantation on Peachtree City's north end.

Flat Creek flows into Lake Kedron at that point, but the water seemed to be coming more from upstream, which forced powerful water and debris into the support structure, said public information officer Betsy Tyler. The bridge in question is located on the Sumner Road end of the neighborhood, she said. Another bridge was checked but is OK, she said. There was no timeframe on repairing the bridge.

Otherwise, it was the usual high-water watches throughout the city on Tuesday Tinsley Mill, Huddleston Ponds, the Flat Creek golf course, which resembled a lake. The city was soaked, but otherwise fared well.

LEC phones out until further notice

The deluge did significant damage to the LaFayette Education Center, flooding the "B" and Vo-Tech buildings, knocking out the entire phone switching system and ruining the field houses, weight rooms and coaches offices for the Fayette County High Tigers.

Mike Satterfield, facilities director for the county school system, said it must have been some rain that sent a wall of water racing downhill from Georgia Avenue and Walker Concrete, through the endzone of Tiger Stadium and then across the old high school campus.

The water roared across Tiger Trail and spilled over the banks of the creek separating the new Fayette High building from the student parking lot. It eventually raced down to Pye's Lake off Hood Avenue, where officials were keeping an eye on the dam.

Satterfield said there was no telling when the phones at the LEC would be working again. In the meantime, call the district's main number: 770-460-3535.
