Drake Field should be shaped up by July 4th

Drake Field is on track to be ready for the city's annual July 4th festivities.

The field, which teems with people hours before the fireworks display, is currently being used to dry out sediment that has been dredged from the bottom of Lake Peachtree.

The contractor on the project still plans to have Drake Field brought back to its previous form by July 4th, Fayette County consulting engineer David Jaeger told the county's water committee Wednesday morning.

The dredging equipment will likely be removed from the lake soon, and it will take another week or two to complete the process of drying the material and hauling it off, Jaeger said.

"The contractor told me he was confident he'll have the park back together for July 4th," Jaeger said.

The hauling process has gone well, Jaeger said. The contractor hoses down the trucks before they exit Drake Field on the temporary gravel road that leads to Ga. Highway 54, he noted.

Water system director Tony Parrott said more silt had to be dredged from the lake bottom than anticipated. That was largely due to the length of time that elapsed between the survey conducted on the lake and the actual work beginning, Parrott noted.
