Mary Elizabeth Nellis Schwartz


Mary Elizabeth Nellis “Nana Nellis” Schwartz, 82, Peachtree City, died May 19, 2003. She was born Jan. 5, 1921 in Pennsylvania. Memorial services will be held June 8, 2003 at Fayetteville First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Ellison officiating. Survivors include a daughter, Rosemary Glennie, Fayetteville; grandson, Brian Glennie, Locust Grove; a granddaughter, Alison and Kevin Kelley, Newnan; great-grandsons, Mitchell Kelley, and Ethan Kelley, both of Newnan, and Austin Glennie, Locust Grove; great-granddaughter, Kylie Glennie, Locust Grove; a brother, Isaac Johnson, Towanda, Pa.; and sisters, Helen Schweiger, Barton, N. Betty Watkins Taylor


Betty Watkins Taylor, 92, Peachtree City, died May 20, 2003. She was born in 1910 in Columbia, S. C. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maxwell Glenn Taylor Jr., a brother, Edward Ashby Watkins III, and sisters, Virginia Watkins Lovell and Theo Watkins Caillouett. She was a longtime resident of Marietta, where she was a member of First Methodist Church and the Marietta Country Club. She was an avid golfer, gardener, and antiques dealer. A private service will be held. Survivors include a daughter, Bette “Betsy” Taylor Dodds, Peachtree City; grandchildren, Laura Stone Nichols, Vestavia Hills, Ala., Christopher Drayton Stone, Marietta, David Maxwell Stone, Susan Stone and David Pence, Daniel Scott and Carrie Cook, all of Atlanta, John Goss and Lisa Stone III, Powder Springs, and 11 great-grandchildren. Higgins Hillcrest Chapel, Newnan, was in charge.

 

Inez A. Wallace


Inez A. Wallace, 86, Union City, died May 22, 2003. She was born March 1, 1917 in Cobb County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Wallace. Services were at the Parrott Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Dr. James W. “Jim” Dyer officiating. Interment was at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, College Park. Survivors include a son, Butch and Jan Wallace, Peachtree City; daughters, Shirley and James Hall, Sharpsburg, Sandra and Allen Marchman, Fayetteville, and Charlene and David Todd, Douglasville; a brother, Hoyt Arrington; a sister, Virginia Etheridge; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren. Dr. William T. Johnson


Dr. William T. Johnson, 79, Fayetteville, died May 22, 2003. He was born July 16, 1923 in Crossett, Ark. He served in the United States Air Corps in World War II as a tail gunner on a B-17. Shot down once, he completed 25 combat missions over Germany and occupied territory. He was a graduate of the University of Central Arkansas and earned a doctor of dental surgery degree from Washington University School of Dentistry. He later earned a master of public health degree from the University of North Carolina. He was the Dental Director for Fulton County from 1960 to 1966 and initiated the use of mouthpieces for Fulton County high school players, the first in the state. He served as State Dental Director of Georgia from 1967 to 1980. He was an associate professor at Emory University School of Dentistry and was a consultant in public health dentistry at the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry for seven years. Memorial services were held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, College Park, where he was a member for over 25 years. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Sue Johnson, Fayetteville; children, Janet McNew, William Jay Johnson, Martha Cheely and Dr. Jeffrey T. Johnson; and grandchildren, Joshua Philmon, William Jared Philmon, Sean Cheely, and Julie Cheely. Memorial donations may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church, College Park. Michele Marie O’Brien


Michele Marie O’Brien, 36, Peachtree City, died May 22, 2003. She was born Oct. 26, 1966 in Rome, N. Y. She was a waitress at the Y-Knot Sports Bar in Peachtree City. Graveside services were at Westminster Memorial Gardens, Peachtree City, with the Rev. Dr. Steve Bingham officiating. Survivors include her children, Jessica O’Brien, Matt O’Brien, Devin O’Brien, Brandi Simonds, Domonic Simonds, and Brianna Simonds; parents, James and Ida Sudol; fiancé, Scott R. Lucy Hewell Steele


Lucy Hewell Steele, 95, Peachtree City, died May 23, 2003. She was born June 26, 1907 in Fayette County, the daughter of Ponie and Sena Snead Hewell. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Love Steele. Graveside services were at the Fayetteville City Cemetery. Survivors include a sister, Irene Hewell VanDevender, Peachtree City; great-nephews, Jerry and Robin Hewell, Fayetteville, and Billy Tate and Bobby Tate, Thomaston; great-great-nephews, Kipp Chambers and T. J. Adamson; nieces, Ada Ballard Hewell, Peachtree City, and Mary Hewell Tate, Thomaston; great-nieces, Jeanne Hewell Chambers, Peachtree City, Jan Newell Adamson, Fayetteville; and a great-great-niece, Alison Chambers. Annie Mae Wellborn


Annie Mae Wellborn, 86, Peachtree City, died May 26, 2003. She was born July 13, 1916 in Roanoke, Ala. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur S. Wellborn, a daughter, Sarah Hughes, and a grandson, Kimball Hughes. Services were at the Tyrone First Baptist Church with the Rev. Farren Roper officiating. Interment was at Westminster Memorial Gardens, Peachtree City. Survivors include children, LeRoy and Louise Storey, and Walter and Harriett Wellborn, all of Loganville, Mary and Robert McLeod, Jonesboro, and Melinda and Dennis Berkelbaugh, Peachtree City; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and sisters, Ruth and Bob Lexson, Atlanta, Frances K. Evie Ivey Kerlin


Evie Ivey Kerlin, 93, Fayetteville, died May 27, 2003. She was born Jan. 1. 1911 in Cuthbert, Ga. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Kerlin. Services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel with the Rev. Darrell Hayes officiating. Interment was at Camp Memorial Park, Fayetteville. She was survived by 11 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Carl J. John Karl Goepp


John Karl Goepp, 92, Riverdale, died May 27, 2003. He was born Aug. 20, 1910 in Eufala, Ala. He was retired from Delta Air Lines and was a member of Riverdale First United Methodist Church. Services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel with Pastor Lanier officiating. Interment was at Camp Memorial Park, Fayetteville. Survivors include a son, John and Robbie Jean Goepp, Gay; a daughter, Amellia Burns, Peachtree City; grandchildren, Austin Burns, Peachtree City, and Michelle Goepp, Newnan; a great-grand-daughter, Rebecca Ann Grant, Newnan; and a brother, George D. Blanche Carter


Blanche Carter, 78, Fayetteville, died May 28, 2003. She was born March 10, 1925 in Watauga County, N. C. She was preceded in death by grandsons, Matthew Carter and Clark McElroy III, a brother, Dennis Trivette, and a sister, Nellie Steven. Services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel with Pastor Dannie Hix officiating. Interment was at Forest Hills Memorial Gardens, Forest Park. Survivors include her husband, Davis Irvin Carter, Fayetteville; sons, Billy and Kathleen Carter, Virginia Beach, Va., and Tommy and Patsy Carter, Stockbridge; a daughter, Pat and Howell McElroy, Fayetteville; a brother, Dexter and Willaree Trivette, Sugar Grove, N. C.; sisters, Orbie and Lin Ward, Boone, N. Rudene Brown Hooten


Rudene Brown Hooten, 83, Fayetteville, died May 27, 2003. She was born Aug. 23, 1919 in Fayette County, the daughter of Marcus and Elizabeth “Lizzie” McEachern Brown. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Hooten. She was a member of the Fayetteville First United Methodist Church, and the Fellowship Sunday School Class. She was a retired State of Georgia employee. Services were at the Fayetteville First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Sam Matthews officiating. Interment was at the Fayetteville City Cemetery. Survivors include a brother, James and Shirley Brown, Fayetteville; sisters, Dorothy B. Brewer and Willette Brown, both of Fayetteville; and sisters-in-law, Bertha H. Couch, and Helen McKinnon. Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home, Fayetteville, was in charge.

Burle O. Naylor


Burle O. Naylor, 88, Peachtree City, died May 28, 2003. He was born Jan. 13, 1915 in Boaz, Ala. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elma Naylor, a son, John Naylor, and a grandson, Chuck Davis. He was a member of the Peachtree City First Baptist Church, and the Peachtree City Kiwanis Club. Services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel with the Rev. Dr. Steve Bingham officiating. Interment was at Westminster Memorial Gardens, Peachtree City. Survivors include a son, Bob J. and Polly Naylor, Cape Coral, Fla.; daughters, Patsy and Bob Bates, and Jettie Davis, all of Peachtree City; a brother, William Naylor, San Antonio, Texas; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Edna Elizabeth Fisher


Edna Elizabeth Fisher, 62, Fayetteville, died May 29, 2003. She was born Jan. 22, 1941in Liverpool, England. She grew up listening to the Beatles performing in local spots of their community. After moving to America, she met her future husband while working at Delta Air Lines. She was later employed and retired from Worldspan. After being diagnosed with cancer, her wish was to see all of her friends. They came from all over the world to cheer her. A memorial service is planned and will be announced at a later date. Survivors include her husband of 18 years, Earl Fisher, Fayetteville; sons, Andrew Atkins, Carlsbad, Calif., and Stephen Robert and Angela Atkins, Fayetteville; a daughter, Deborah and James Poole, Prattville, Ala.; a brother, Alfred Thompson, Bollington, England; and 12 grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the March of Dimes. Jones Funeral Home, Newnan, was in charge.

James Kinnaird Ford


James Kinnaird Ford, 85, North Wilkesboro, N. C., died May 31, 2003. He was born March 11, 1918 in Lancaster, Ky. to Elijah Evans and Patsy Kinnaird Ford. He attended Centre College and the University of Kentucky before serving in the United States Army in World War II. He served 14 months of duty in Panama. He retired from Belknap Hardware after 44 years as a sales representative. He was a member of the Men's Bible Class at North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church. A memorial service was held at the church with the Rev. Dr. Benton Trawick officiating. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Ruth Burke Ford, North Wilkesboro; sons, James K. Ford Jr., Salisbury, Md., and Douglas H. Ford, Charlotte; daughters, Anita F. Davis, Fayetteville, and Patsy F. Eads, Oxford, Miss; and seven grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church, 804 E. Street, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659. Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, North Wilkesboro, N. C., was in charge.

Leigh Anne Gayle


Leigh Anne Gayle, 29, Marietta, died May 29, 2003. She was born Dec. 28, 1973 in Germany. Services were at the Parrott Funeral Home chapel with Minister Thom Miller officiating. Interment was at Westminster Memorial Gardens, Peachtree City. Survivors include her parents, Jerry and Chong Gayle, Peachtree City; a brother, Joseph “Joe” Gayle, Peachtree City; a grandmother, Lena M. Gayle, Alva, Fla.; and an uncle, Randy and Janie Gayle, N. Fort Myers, Fla. Parrott Funeral Home, Fairburn, was in charge.
